Chapter 2- Cell Growth & Reproduction Flashcards
List the Phases in Sequence
- Prophase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
What happens in Prophase
Chromosomes become visible The nucleolus disappears Mitotic spindle forms Nuclear envelope disappears Chromosomes become more coiled and can be seen under a light microscope
What happens in Metaphase?
All DNA lines up, usually forms a black line
What happens in Anaphase?
DNA pulls apart to opposite polls of the cell
What happens in Telophase?
Pinching into Two. DNA is reorganizing
What happens when Sequence is disturbed?
Cancer occurs when the normal “checkpoints” regulating mitosis are ignored or overridden by a cancer cell resulting in uncontrolled cell division
What is Meiosis?
A type of cell division that results in 4 daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, as in the production of gametes and plant spores
Distinguish between Meiosis and Mitosis
Meiosis involves 2 cell divisions
Meiosis leads to production of germ cells (which are cells that give rise to gametes) (sex cells)
What is Mitosis
The division of Nucleus in which the duplicated DNA is Distributed to New Daughter Cells
