ventral cavity
contains the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities
dorsal cavity
contains the cranial and spinal cavities ( brain and spine )
cranial cavity
space within the skull containing the brain
thoracic cavity ( chest cavity )
contains the heart and lungs
pleural cavity
the space between the pleural membranes surrounding each lung
pleura
a double membrane that surrounds the lungs and protects them
mediastinum

abdominal cavity ( abdomen )

the muscle between the abdominal and thoracic cavities
peritoneum
a double membrane surrounding the organs ( liver, stomach, intestines ) in the abdomen
peritoneal cavity
surrounds many of the organs in the abdominopelvic cavity
retroperitoneal area
behind the peritoneum, contains the kidneys
pelvic cavity
space below the abdominal cavity containing the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and a portion of the intestines
pelvis
bones of the hip
spinal cavity
the space within the backbones containing the spinal cord
