Chapter 2 - Biology Flashcards
What is the cell cycle?
Body cells that divide in a series of stages
What is the definition of chromosomes?
They are things that carry the genes that contain instructions for making new cells
What is the definition of genes?
Genes are a small packet of information that controls a characteristic
What is the definition of DNA?
The unique molecule that makes up your chromosomes
What happens in the first stage of the cell cycle?
Stage 1: Longest stage in the cycle, the cells grow bigger, increase the mass, and carry out normal activities. Most importantly they replicate their DNA to form two copies of each chromosome for cell devision.
What happens in the second stage of the cell cycle?
Mitosis: in this process one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the dividing cell and the nucleus divides
What happens in the third stage of the cell cycle?
Stage 3: This is the stage during which the cytoplasm and the cell membranes also divide to form two daughter cells
Why is cell division by mitosis so important to the body?
Mitosis produces the additional cells needed for growth and development in multicelular organisms, and for the replacement of worn out or damaged cells.
What are stem cells?
Cells that are unspecialised
