Chapter 2 - Bacterium & Protista Flashcards
chemoheterotrophy
chemical energy by eating other things
photoauthotrophy
make own food using sunlight
Photoheterotrophy
both eat and synthesize things
Chemolithoautotrophy
produce own food, use chemical energy, eat inorganic material, bottom of the ocean, don’t need sun
How do we classify protists? (shape)
Rod - bacillius, round - coccus, spiral - spirillum
Function of pila
adhesion and exchange of genetic material
Endospores
life boat, cell forms wall with newly formed DNA - can last forever
What are the two ways prokaryotic bacteria can alter DNA?
mutations, congegation, transduction, and translation
Congegation
Pila form bridge and DNA transfers
Plasmid
chromosomal ring of DNA
Transduction
ie viruses (inject DNA then causes cell to make it’s DNA) can’t replicate itself
Transformation
Cell dies and leaves DNA behind for another cell to find
What is fixation?
taking things out of environment and putting into a useable form! i.e. carbon fixation, photosynthesis
