Chapter 2 Flashcards
(Divisions of) Peripheral Nervous System
Somatic Nervous System: enables voluntary control of our skeletal muscles.
Autonomic Nervous System: controls our glands and the muscles of our internal organs.
Sympathetic Nervous System: arouses and expends energy.
Parasympathetic Nervous System: produces the opposite effects, conserving energy as it calms by decreasing your heartbeat, lower your blood sugar. etc…..
neurotransmitters
Chemical messengers which travel across the synapse and bind to receptor sites on the receiving neuron.
Brainstem
contains the medulla an pons
medulla controls heart beat automatically
The pons helps coordinate movement
cerebral cortex
Ultimate control and information processing center.
cerebral cortex allows us to reflect on who were in the past and who we’ll be in the future.
Limbic system
contains: Amygdala, Hypothalamus, Hippocampus
Primal reaction: anger, anxiety, hunger, thirst, conscious memories
Brain regions from oldest to newest
Brainstem, Thalamus, Cerebellum, Limbic System, Cerebral Cortex
Neuron Parts
Dendrite, Cell Body, Axon, Myelin sheath, Terminal Branches of Axon
