Chapter 2 Flashcards
What’s the final factor that will determine if the vehicle will move?
contact between the vehicle and the road through the tires
How is brake heat dissipated?
The heat is absorbed and dissipated into the atmosphere, primarily through the rake drums/rotors
If the weight of the vehicle is doubled, how many times must the stopping power be increased?
double the weight requires double the stopping power
What causes brake fade?
brake fade is when they stop working properly due to overheating
What can cause jackknifing?
Poor braking techniques
What’s the difference between ABS and ATC?
ABS -helps prevent wheel lock up or skids caused by over braking on slippery road surfaces.
ATC -uses the same wheel sensors o sense if a wheel has lost traction and is spinning. If the wheel begins to spin the traction control system will apply the bake transferring power to the opposite side.
What’s one of the hazards of stopping a tractor/trailer combination?
8 equally loaded axles and 16 brakes (more parts to potentially not work properly)
When should a retarding device be used?
controlling speed on long downgrades without using the main brakes
What’s brake lag time?
a car’s brakes work almost instantly when you press the brake pedal, with air brakes there’s a brake lag time of approximately 4/10 off a second until it begins to slow yo down after you press the pedal..
