Chapter 2 Flashcards
The common charactaristics of turbulent flows:
- turbulent flows are rotational and 3D
- vorticity fluctuations are important
- flows are dispersive (energy is lost as they get smaller and smaller)
- to maintain the turbulent energy must be supplied
- fluid motions are very unpredictable (statistical/ emperical used)
- the rate of transfer and mixing >> (several order larger than) the rate of molecular diffusion.
- rate of molecular diffusion can be neglected
difference between non turbulent flows and turbulent flows
Non turbulent flows:
- Non tangental force at bounday
- laminar
Turbulent flows
- express tangental forces
tangental forces are known as
shearing stresses which are related to the fluid viscocity
fluid viscocity: tendancy to resist the flow
shearing stress=
u is the dynamic viscocity coefficient
kinematic viscocity coefficient:
V = u/p
u = Dynamic viscocity coefficeint
p=density
such flows are
impossible to predict
we quantify the mean state by
performing averaging operation on the atmospheric properties
any instat value/ actual value (a) is decomposed into
a mean (a-) and a fluctuating part (a’)
a-= 1/N ΣNi=1 ai
the reynolds averaging follows three rules:
