IDEA
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act:
Students with a disability are provided free public education that is tailored to their unique needs
FAPE
Free appropriate public education
Zero reject, no cost to parent (transportation)
LRE
Least restrictive environment:
Children with disabilities should be educated with students without disabilities (to the maximum extent possible)
IEP
Individualized Education Program:
1) level of performance
2) annual goals

Procedural Due Process
Parents can examine all records
Parents have a right to confidentiality of records
Nondiscriminatory Assessment
Child is evaluated in all areas of suspected disability before placement in special ed
Tests are not racially for linguistically biased
Parental Participation
Mandates parent involvement, parents need to participate fully in deciding if child will be placed in special ed
