Chapter 2 Flashcards
How are fold mountains formed?
When two plates collide pressure from the plates slowly folds the earths crust into fold mountains. The crust is compressed and is buckled up to form mountains.
What are anticlines and synclines
Anticlines are the unfolds
Synclines are the downfolds
Name 3 examples of fold mountains
Alps in Europe
Himalayas in Asia
Andes Mountains in South America
Cause of the Alps?
African plate colliding with the Eurasian plate
Cause of the Himalayas
Indian plate colliding with the Eurasian plate
Cause of the Andes Mountains
Nazca Plate colliding with South American Plate
Explain the formation of the Andes Mountains
The Nazca plate sank under the South American plate which folded the crust creating the Andes Mountains
Explain the formation of the mountains of Munster
Formed 250 million years ago during the Armorican foldings. Pressure came from the south to form the mountains of Munster.
What happened to the Mountains of Munster over time
They were worn down
