Chapter 2 Flashcards
The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
Chemical Reaction
A solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution
Precipitate
A combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance
Chemical Formula
A representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between reactants
Chemical Equation
A substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction
Reactant
The substance that forms a chemical reaction
Product
The law that states that mass cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction
Law of Conservation or Mass
A reaction in which two substances combine to form a new compound
Synthesis Reaction
A reaction where a single substance breaks down into two substance
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction in which one element or radical takes place of another element or radical in a compound
Single-Displacement Reaction
A reaction in which a gas, solid, precipitate, or molecular compound forms from the exchange of ions between two compounds
Double-Displacement Reaction
A chemical reaction in which heat is released to the surroundings
Exothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction that requires heat
Endothermic Reaction
The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed
Law of Conservation of Energy
The minimum amount of energy required to start a chemical reaction
Activation Energy
