Chapter 2 Flashcards
neurons
nerve cells that specialize in communication
Central Nervous System
the brain and spinal chord
Peripheral Nervous System
all neurons going to and from the central nervous system aka neurons in the extremities
Somatic Division
voluntary muscle movements
Autonomic Division
automatic functions like breathing, digestion, and heartbeat
Sympathetic Division
prepares body for stress/threat
Parasympathetic
calms body down
Sensory Neurons
carry info from the sense receptors to the central nervous system
Motor Neurons
carry info from the central nervous system to muscles and glands
Interneurons
communicate only with other neurons, usually really small and only communicate with a specific region
Dendrites
branch-like fibers that receive messages from other neurons
Cell Body
processes messages and then sends them along the axon
Axon
carries a message through the length of the neuron to the terminal buttons
Myelin Sheath
protective coating that surrounds the axon and speeds up the transmission of messages
Terminal Buttons (Axon Terminals)
small modules at the end of the axon that release chemicals out for other neurons
