MAJ- The principle—basic to procedural democratic theory—that the decision of a group must reflect the preference of more than half of those participating; a simple majority.
MIN-The benefits of government that cannot be denied to any citizen by majority decisions.
Political equality: Equality in political decision making: one vote per person, with all votes counted equally.
procedural democratic theory
has principles that describe how government should make decisions (who should participate in decision making, how much should each vote count, how many votes are needed to reach a decision)
Pluralism
majoritarianism(mass public), elite/class theory (the wealthy) (the view that a small group makes most important government decisions)
- ruled by the people, contains interest groups, numerous (plural) institutions of overlapping government
- James Madison called the interest groups factions from the federalist 10
- competition for support/money/members/legislation
Majoritarianism
the idea that majority rules, representative democracy
- vote directly and requires that everyone votes
- elections
- favoring equality/order
- participation
- “by the people”
- majority rule
democratization
a process of transition as a country in attempt to move from an authoritarian government form of government to a democratic one
