operating system

What 4 main components does an operating system share?
provide user interface, manage files, manage hardware, manage applications.
windows desktop
the initial screen that is displayed after the user logs on and windows is loaded.
graphical user interface (GUI)
uses graphics as compared to a command-driven interface
aero user interface
Windows 7 and Vista desktop provides a 3-D user interface that gives a glassy appearance and is sometimes called Aero glass. This is available on Windows 7 Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions
To support the Aero interface, what does Windows 7 require?
1GB of RAM and a video card or onboard video that supports the Direct X9 graphics that has at least 128 MB of graphics memory.

What are 4 ways to open an application in Windows?
use the start menu, use the search box, use windows explorer or the computer window, use a shortcut icon.
What is the difference between a window and dialog box?
a window can be resized but a dialog box can not.
Aero Snap
automatically maximizes a window when you drag it to the top of the desktop. To restore a maximized window to its original size, drag the window downward on the screen. Drag a window to the right or left of the screen so that it snaps to the side of the screen to fill half the screen.
Aero Shake
minimize all other windows except the one you shake. To shake a window, grab the title bar and shake it. Shake again to restore the size of the other windows. You can also use the maximize, minimize, and close buttons on a window.
jump list
provides access to some of the major functions of the program. When you mouse over the rectangle to the far right of the task bar, all windows disappear so you can see the desktop and any gadgets you might have there
Aero Peek
gives you a peek at the desktop. Click the rectangle to minimize all windows. Click the rectangle again to restore all windows
gadget
a mini app that appears on the desktop
