Chapter 2 4.7 Flashcards
Explain how human factors (urbanisation, land-use change and deforestation) can affect flood hydrographs.
If a big city was built on the flood plain and there was a flood the city would be flooded as there would be no saturation in the ground as concrete is impermeable. Land use change if not properly planned could go wrong e.g. lake district floods regularly as most of the trees were cut down and this reduced the saturation point.
The potential for flooding here is huge because of a loss of trees resulting in deforestation and a lower saturation point.
. Explain how physical and human factors cause river flooding in the River Eden.
I think impermeable rock is a factor because impermeable won’t allow water to pass through it and this means water has to go over the top of it, this also increases surface run off meaning that flash flooding is likely to happen.
I think the town of Carlisle is a factor because it has a lot of concrete in it which is impermeable material, increased surface run off.
What are the effects of flooding on people and environment? What problems were caused?
The effects are that farms are flooded and the animals die because they are trapped on hills surrounded by water. The fields are also impacted as they cannot take any water for long time after the flood. People have to be rescued by helicopter in the most extreme cases. Most people, however have to pay a lot of money to get their businesses and houses repaired.
