Adverse- Effect Discrimination
A rule or standard is neutral on its face an applies equally but actually has discriminatory effect on an individual/group because it imposes special characteristics of the individual/group. Penalties or restrictions that are not imposed on others.
Bona Fide (Occupational Requirement)
A defence that an employer uses to justify a discriminatory standard. Created in good-faith and necessary to fulfill work-related purpose by demonstrating it is impossible to accommodate without imposing undue hardship on the employer.
Direct Discrimination
A rule, practice, preference, or restriction makes and arbitrary distinction that on its face discriminates on a prohibited ground. (stereotype)
Discrimination
Intentional or not places a restriction, preference, distinction based on personal characteristics of the individual/ group that arbitrary imposes burdens, obligations, or disadvantages not imposed on others. Withholds or limits access to opportunities, benefits, and advantages available to other members of society.
Harassment (Hostile Environment)
Conduct that an individual is required to ensure to continue working in a place of employe, accommodation, or accessing facilities or service. Generally take the form of: - Racial - Ethnic - Gender - Religous
Harassment: Quid Pro Quo
Where a benefit is contingent upon participation in an activity.
Generally take the form of:
Sexual harassment
Prohibited grounds of discrimination
Race, colour, place of origin, religion, creed, sex, age, marital and family status, sexual orientation, disability, criminal record.
Systematic Discrimination
Stems from long-standing stereotypes and values assumptions that create a discriminatory effect.

H- Harassment
Social Work and human rights
Should have a knowledge of human rights in order to:
1) Ensure your own rights aren’t being violated
2) Ensure you don’t infringe anyone else’s rights
3) Identify if client’s human rights are being violated (Assist clients accordingly)
