What is Constructivism?
Termed by Piaget; Students are not “blank slates” but creators of their own learning; Through experiential learning with real life experiences students are able construct their own knowledge
What is Reflective Thought?
An effort or process to connect existing ideas to new information; allow individuals to modify their existing schemas to incorporate new ideas
What is assilmation?
When a new concept “fits” with prior knowledge and the new information expands an existing network
What is accomdation?
When the new concept does not “fit” with the existing network
What is the Sociocultural Theory?
Vygotsky; Three parts: Learn through social interactions and in social settings; Learner learns best in their ZPD (zone of proximal development); semiotic mediation where the use of language, diagrams, pictures, visual actions are learned and practiced
What are manipulatives?
Physical objects that students and teachers can use to illustrate and discover mathematical concepts, whether made specifically for mathematics or for other purposes (such as buttons)
What are some types of representations?
Any object, picture, or drawing that presents the concept or onto which the relationship for that concept can be imposed
What is a concept?
A mathematical law that can be applied to different problems
What is a procedure?
A set process that produces a desired mathematical outcome, or a value
What is pedagogical content knowledge?
The deep understanding of the content that allows teachers to teach in multiple ways through prior knowledge, experiences, and cultural background of students.
What does it mean to have a profound understanding of mathematics?
Knowing and understanding fundamental mathematics to be able to apply it in any situation; Depth not width, breadth, and thoroughness
What is an algorithm?
A set of procedures that is used to solve a problem
What is a partial product?
The product of one term of a multiplicand and one term of its multiplier
