Q

What is the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)?

A

Began in the 1960s and continued at regular intervals where the US measured the progress of the nation’s students in performance in mathematics. It provides data on progress of US improvement that examines state and national trends and levels. It examines students in grade 4, 8, and 12. The students are measured at four levels of achievement: below basic, basic, proficient, and advanced. The levels of the US students in grades 4 and 8 are at disappointing levels.

Q

What is the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)?

A

Began in the mid-90s with 41 nations and continued with more countries added where data was collected in grades 4, 8, and 12. Recent report of 2007: Labeled US “a mile wide and an inch deep”; US curriculum attempted to do everything and as a result rarely provided depth; Found the US teacher to start with a review then demonstrate a problem and the teacher tends to show students how to do things rather than let them solve things for themselves.
