Chapter 2 Flashcards
Hygroscopic Reagents
Rapidly absorb moisture from the air
Buoyancy
The upward force exerted on an object in a liquid or gaseous fluid.
True Mass
The mass measured in a vacuum.
Parallax
Error that occurs when your eye is not at the same height as the liquid [when reading volume in a graduated apparatus].
Volumetric Flask
Calibrated to contain a particular volume of solution at 20°C when the bottom of the meniscus is adjusted to the center of the mark on the flask’s neck.
Adsorption
Process in which a substance sticks to a surface.
Absorption
Process in which a substance is taken inside another (i.e. water taken into a sponge.)
Pipets
Deliver known volumes of liquid.
Transfer Pipet
Calibrated to deliver one fixed volume.
Measuring Pipets\
Calibrated to deliver a variable volume.
Micropipets
Deliver volumes of 1 to 1000 μL
Microliter Syringes
Come in sizes 1 to 500 μL and have an accuracy and precision near 1%.
Gravimetric Analysis
The mass of product from a reaction is measured to determine how much unknown was present.
Mother Liquor
Liquid from which a substance precipitates or crystallizes.
Filtrate
Liquid that passes through a filter.
