What is ethnicity?
One’s cultural factors such as nationality, culture, language, beliefs, etc
What is a ethnic group?
a group that regards itself or is regarded by others as a distinct community by virtue of certain characteristics that will help to distinguish the group from the surrounding community; apart on the basis of cultural/ national origin, values/perceptions about health/illness
What is a minority group?
people living in a society in which they are disadvantaged
What does race mean?
a persons physical appearance
What is culture?
Integrated patterns of human behavior that include lang, thoughts, beliefs, customs, etc of racial, ethnic, and social groups
What are values?
Beliefs about the worth of something and serve as standards that influence behavior and thinking
What is value orientation?
Learned and shared values thru the socialization process; reflects the personality type of a society
What is a folk healing system?
A folk healing system embodies the beliefs, values, and treatment approaches of a particular cultural group that are products of cultural development; herbalists, Christian Scientists, midwives, spiritualists
What is a professional care system?
Professional care is “characterized by specialized education and knowledge, responsibility for care, and expectation of remuneration of services rendered”
What diseases are the Arab population prone to, and what are health barriers for these people?
- Prone to: adult-onset diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, role of acculturation, mental health, teenage smoking
- Health barriers: religious beliefs and practices, cultural norms/ modesty, gender issues regarding providers, comm difficulties, folk remedies, lack of culturally competent providers
What diseases are the Asian population prone to, and what are health barriers for these people?
- Prone to: hesitancy to seek early diagnosis/ screening, higher rate of TB, mental healeth problems due to adjustment issues, lower rate of obesity and hypertension
- Barriers to care: poverty, stress in intergenerational relationships, cultural norms that prevent health care seeking, loss of social networks, poor access to services
What diseases are the Latino population prone to, and what are health barriers for these people?
- Prone to higher incidences of: stomach cancer, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, HIV
- Barriers to care: uninsured, use less preventive health care, lack of interpreter, lack culturally appropriate health care services, reliance on folk sys of healing
What diseases are the Black population prone to, and what are health barriers for these people?
- Prone to: HIV, higher cancer deaths, hypertension, obesity, mental health concers
- Barriers to care: poverty, lack of health insurance, inadequate/ unsafe environments
What diseases are the Native American population prone to, and what are health barriers for these people?
- Prone to: smoking, substance abuse, deaths by: unintentional injuries, cirrhosis, homicide, suicide, pneumonia, diabetes
- Barriers to care: difficult access to care, underserved pop
What diseases are the Homeless population prone to, and what are health barriers for these people?
- Prone to: basic survival issues, respiratory and infectious diseases, dental and vision problems, mental health concerns, substance/ drug abuse
- Barriers to care: access, affordability, lack of transportation, poverty
