Chapter 2 Flashcards
Isotope (Definition)
Atoms of the same elements that differ in mass and number of neutrons.
Proton
Positively charged subatomic particle.
Electron
Negatively charged subatomic particle.
Neutron
Subatomic particle with no charge.
Atomic Number (Z)
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. (also electrons in neutral atoms)
Mass Number (A)
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Ions
Atoms that are electrically charged with an unequal number of protons and electrons.
Charge of an Atom (calc)
Protons - Electrons
Anion
Atoms that gains electrons exhibiting a negative charge.
Cation
Atom that loses electrons exhibiting a positive charge.
Chemical Symbol
An abbreviation used to indicate an element or an atom of an element.

What is the mass of each proton and neutron?
~1 amu
What is the atomic mass of a single atom in amu?
Approximately equal to its mass number.
Average Mass of Isotope
Σ (Fractional abundance x isotopic mass)
