section 2.1 collecting data
variable
is a general type of characteristic ( or type of status ) which can be different for each person or thing.
example - name , height , color , texture
data
is the collection of all observations for a particular variable or variables , from one or more people or things
statistics
the branch of mathematics that covers the methods and procedures in analyzing data
inferential statistics
which involves analyzing interpreting and drawing conclusions based on data .
population
is the collection of all individuals or items under consideration in a study
census
is information (data) obtained from the entire population
sample
is the part of a population from which information is actually collected
parameters
is a numerical measurement describing some characteristics of a population
statistic
is a numerical measurement describing some characteristics of a population
qualitative variable
are variables which have values that are words , symbols or categories
categorical values
gender , job title, letter grade , phone number , numbers , on football jersey
quantitative variable
are variables which have values that are numerical values with a specific order and units
ex. heigh , weight , temperature , number of siblings , hours sleep
random sampling
is using a random method to select from population
representative sampling
which means that the sample has characteristics similar to the population being suited in order to avoid having bias
