Chapter 2 Flashcards
Good manners on the road
- help other road users by signalling correctly and moving to the correct position at junctions
- if a large vehicle is trying to overtake you but is taking a long time, slow down and let it pass
- if you’re travelling at the speed limit and a driver comes up behind flashing your headlights or trying to overtake, keep a steady course and allow them to overtake. Don’t try to step them- they could become more frustrated
- only sound your horn if there’s danger and you need to let others know you’re there
-
Driving in the night
- dip the lights when you are following another vehicle
- meeting another vehicle coming towards you
- if you’re queuing in traffic at night, use your handbrake rather than keeping your foot on the brake as brake lights could dazzle drivers behind
- only flash headlights to show other road users you’re there not for priority, impatience or to greet others
Handling animals on the road
- keep speed right down
- give them plenty of room
- if road is blocked stop and switch off engine until the road is clear
Standing behind vehicle
do not tailgate as this is intimidating and distracting for the road user in front, it is very dangerous and could cause an incident
Distances from other vehicles
dry conditions = 2 second gap
wet weather = 4 second gap
What to do if another road user is too closely?
gradually increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front, this will give you a greater safety margin. If another road user cuts in front of you, drop back until you’ve restored your safety margin
Pelican Crossing
when the amber light flashes give way to pedestrians on the crossing and don’t move off until its clear
Puffin Crossing
normal traffic lights
Toucan Crossing
Same as puffin but allow cyclists to cross at the same time as pedestrains
