Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is static Electricity
Like charges repel each other, and opposite charges attract.
How did the Radiation on Photographic film experiment confirm or oppose Daltons Atomic Theory?
As Alpha and Beta particles passed through the charged corridor, they deviated from one another.
This showed that atoms of elements can be broken into smaller pieces, therefore Dalton’s atomic theory was not quite right.
What two experiement established the properties of electrons?
1- Thomson Experiment (electron gun)
2- Mass spectrometer
(fact check this card)
Who discovered the electron? What was the name of this model? Describe it.
J.J Thompson. Plum Pudding Model. Electrons surrounded by a volume of positive charge, like negatively-charged “plums” embedded in a positively-charged “pudding” (hence the name).
What was the nuclear model of an atom?
Almost all the mass and positive charge is in the center.
What is the charge and symbol for Electrons?
Negatively Charged
Symbol: _0/-1e or e^-
What is the charge and symbol for Protons?
Positively Charged
Symbol: _1/1p or p^+
What is the charge and symbol for Neutrons?
Neutral Charge
Symbol: _1/0 or n^0
Briefly describe the composition of the atom.
The nucleus contains protons and neutrons.
Electrons surround the nucleus in a ‘cloud’
In the neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons.
How can you find the mass number of an atom?
Sum of the number of protons and neutrons.
What is an ion?
When compounds, atoms, or groups of atoms have lost or gained electrons, they become charged. The resulting species are called ions.
What is a cation?
Atoms who lose electrons and become positively charged.
