Q

How did the Radiation on Photographic film experiment confirm or oppose Daltons Atomic Theory?

A

As Alpha and Beta particles passed through the charged corridor, they deviated from one another.
This showed that atoms of elements can be broken into smaller pieces, therefore Dalton’s atomic theory was not quite right.

Q

Who discovered the electron? What was the name of this model? Describe it.

A

J.J Thompson. Plum Pudding Model. Electrons surrounded by a volume of positive charge, like negatively-charged “plums” embedded in a positively-charged “pudding” (hence the name).

Q

Briefly describe the composition of the atom.

A

The nucleus contains protons and neutrons.
Electrons surround the nucleus in a ‘cloud’
In the neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons.

Q

What is an ion?

A

When compounds, atoms, or groups of atoms have lost or gained electrons, they become charged. The resulting species are called ions.
