Chapter 2 Flashcards
Purpose of critical race theory
Developed by Derrek Bell in the 1970’s. exposing everyday, unexamined racist assumptions. Challenge the ways that race and racial power are constructed by law and culture. Challenge and unpack the ways in which white supremacy and privilege are maintained despite the constitutional guarantee of equal protection. The law is not a neutral tool but rather a part of the problem. Draws on critical strategies to expose how low constructs race to disadvantage people of color. Critical race theorists are engaged in building a movement to eliminate racial oppression and other forms of group-based oppression.
CRITICAL SCHOLARSHIP ON WHITENESS IS NOT AN ASSAULT ON WHITE PEOPLE THEMSELVES; IT IS AN ASSAULT ON THE SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED AND CONSTANTLY REINFORCED POWER OF WHITE IDENTIFICATIONS, NORMS, AND INTEREST… IT IS POSSIBLE FOR WHITE PEOPLE TO TAKE A GENUINE, ACTIVE ROLE IN DECONSTRUCTING WHITENESS
Neoliberalism and instrumentalist (with respect to how radicalized youth are treated in Canada)
Why is multiculturalism considered problematic by critical race theorist
New racism
Not biological heredity, the incompatibility of the lifestyle and traditions. The notion that certain cultural traits, particularly those that are Western are both “deficient and pathological” accounting for the degree to which individuals are equipped to “acculturate” into society and take advantage of available opportunities. Racism without race holds that the problem is not inherent inequalities of the society and the systematic racism that sustains it, but the culture of individuals acquired through socialization by the group. this culture is believed to limit individuals, hence the dominant view that people must integrate.
Rationalization
Why is acculturation Siri regarded as problematic by critical race theorist
Why is the term visible minority problematic
It conveys that it’s not simply that individuals are Black, Brown, Asian, or Indigenous but that our race difference is dynamic and exists in relation to the historical and contemporary ethos of White hegemonic structures of society.
Model minority
Anti-black racism
Black youth are one of the most referenced in the textbook, hence using critical race theory as a theoretical framework. But why, when most, especially those of Caribbean descent are second and third-generation Canadians, and many more whose ancestry dates back to slavery and early immigration? The hegemony of racism towards Black people is rooted historically in European colocalization and related to the slave trade.
