What is a solution?
One phase system with more than one component in a homogeneous mixture
Compare ideal gas mixtures with ideal solution
i.g. has no intermolecular interactions
i.s. the species of one componenet can replace those of another component without changing the (1) spacial structure of solution and (2) the energy of intermolecular interactions
What would make A and B an ideal solution?
A and B have similar size and shape
A-A, A-B, and B-B bonds have similar interaction energies
Why does ideal solution mixing not change V, U, H?
(AT CONST T AND P) mixing of components of i.s. does not change the internal interaction energy of the components
For i.s. why is ΔG ≤ 0 for mixing for all compositions?
Only effect of mixing of an i.s. is to make components more randomly ordered, which is always a spontaneous process
A solution w/ any composition can form if it’s ideal
For binary i.s., why is ΔG minimum for mixing when xA=xB=0.5?
Most randomly occured distribution in a solution occurs when components are present in equal amounts
