CHAPTER 1 Flashcards
What is the difference between extensive properties and intensive properties?
Extensive depends on size of system
Intensive is independent of size of system
What is the distinction between state and path properties?
State tells nothing about how system reaches a given state
Path depends on particular path followed by the system
What is the thermodynamics 2nd law tell us?
ΔS(tot) > 0
Entropy will always increase over time
What is the physical meaning of entropy?
Disorder of molecules
What is the third law of thermodynamics?
Entropy of a pure substance in its stable form is 0 @ 0K
What does the third law tell us?
Absolute entropy of a substance at temperature T for constant P
What are the types of systems?
isolated: no mass, energy, or momentum transfer
closed: no mass transfer, but energy and momentum can transfer
open: mass, energy, and momentum can transfer
