What is the term “state”?
The organization that maintains a monopoly of force over a territory
What is the term “sovereignty”?
The ability to carry out actions and policies within a territory independently of external actors and internal rivals

The fundamental rules and norms of politics

The leadership that runs the state
What is the term “country”?
The political system that combines state, regime, and government. And the people who live within the system
What is the term “legitimacy”?
A value whereby something or someone is recognized and accepted as right and proper
What is “traditional legitimacy”?
Someone or something is valid because “it has always been that way.”
What is “charismatic legitimacy”?
Individuals who can move and persuade the public through ideas and the manner in which they present them
What is” rational-legal legitimacy”?
System of laws and procedures that are presumed neutral or rational
What is the term “federalism”?
Powers such as taxation, lawmaking, and security are devolved to regional bodies and local legislature
What is “asymmetric federalism”?
Power is divided unevenly between regional bodies
What are “Unitary States”?
Political power is concentrated at a national level and local authority is limited
What is the term “devolution”?
Decentralization of states
What is the term “capacity”?
The ability of a state to wield power in order to carry out basic tasks of providing security and reconciling freedom and equality
What is the term “autonomy”?
The ability of the state to wield its power independently of the public or international actors
