What is the chemical name of a drug?
Assigned using standard nomenclature.
Established by the International Union of. Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
A drug has only one chemical name which is helpful in predicting a substances physical and chemical properties.
Ex: lithium carbonate, calcium gluconate, sodium chloride.
What is a drugs mechanism of action?
How a drug produces its physiological effect on the body.
What is the generic name of a drug?
Usually less complicated and easier to remember. There is one generic name for each drug, there is values in using the name and students must memorize it.
What is a drugs trade name?
It’s assigned by the company marketing the drug.
What is a combination drug?
It contains more than one active generic ingredient.
Are there differences between a trade name drug and its generic equivalent?
The answer is unclear. However, drug formulations are not the same and the two drugs might have different inert ingredients.
