Chapter 2 Flashcards
Electrons
One of the three particles that makes up an atom, it sits on the outside shell and has negative charge.
Nucleus
The positively charged center of an atom, it contains the mass and is made up of protons and neutrons
Protons
Another one of the three particles that make up an atom, protons reside inside of the nucleus and has a positive charge
Neutrons
5e third particle that makes up an atom, sits with the protons and has a neutral charge
Elements
Fundamental substances that only contain one type of atom, atoms of each element have characteristics that help to distinguish them from other elements.
There are more than 100 elements, all depicted on the periodic table, 92 occur naturally
98% of all living things are made up of 6 key elements: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sulfur
Atomic Number
Equal to the number of protons in an atom
Atomic Mass
Equal to the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Atomic Weight
( Relative atomic mass) equal to the average atomic mass numbers of multiple versions of one element
Isotopes
Forms of and element with different numbers of neutrons, thus a different mass number
Radioisotopes
Molecule
Orbital
Octet
Chemical bond
Covalent bond
