Chapter 2 Flashcards
[Ch.2] After Dill’s departure, What did Scout look forward to most and why
Dill left in early September and Scout was miserable without him. She continuously looked over at other children who all seemed to have fun in the schoolyard. She wanted to join them.
[Ch.2] What did Jem condescend to do for Scout?
He decided to walk Scout to school on her first day. Atticus may have paid him some money for this.
[Ch.2] What was Scout not to do to Jem at school?
She was not to approach him at all for any reason, and should simply to him him alone.
[Ch.2] Who is Scout’s teacher and where is she from? What is she like?
The first grade teacher is Miss Caroline Fisher. She is from Winston County, North Alabama. She had bright auburn hair, pink cheeks, and wore a red-and-white-stripped dress.
[Ch.2] How did Miss Caroline begin the class?
She began the class with a book on cats. She then introduced the class to the alphabet.
[Ch.2] What did Miss Caroline discover about Scout? How did Miss Caroline react to the discovery?
Scout was already literate and could write. Miss Caroline told Scout that her father (Atticus) should not to teach her anymore .
[Ch.2] When Scout tells Jem about Miss Caroline’s reaction to her ability to read and write, how does Jem respond?
Jem says that it’s okay and that Miss Caroline is introducing a new way of teaching called the Dewey Decimal System.
[Ch.2] According to Scout, who is to blame for her ability to write? Why?
Scout says that it is Calpurnia’s fault that she is able to write. Calpurnia would print the alphabet and copy a chapter from the bible, before making Scout reproduce her penmanship satisfactorily (although Scout seldom pleased Calpurnia in this).
[Ch.2] When Miss Caroline announces that it is lunch time, what problem occurs?
Walter Cunningham did not bring his lunch. Since his family has a poor background, he does not come with lunch, and refuses to borrow from Miss Caroline when she offers him a quarter. Miss Caroline is confused and unaware of why Walter rejects her offer.
[Ch.2] What does Scout recall about the Cunninghams?
Walter’s father was a client of Atticus. When Mr. Cunningham said that he may not be able to pay Atticus in money, Atticus said it was no big deal.
Scout learns from Atticus that the Cunninghams are poor in terms of money. They are farmers. Instead, they can only pay with what they have (foods), and the crash hit them hard.
[Ch.2] Who else works similar to the Cunninghams?
Dr. Reynolds works similarly to the Cunninghams. He charges a bushel of potatoes for the delivery of a baby.
[Ch.2] Why do the Cunninghams not want a WPA job? Also, according to Atticus, why are professionals poor?
If Mr. Cunningham were to get a WPA job, his land would go to ruin. He was willling to go hungry to keep his land and vote as he pleased.
According to Atticus, professionals are poor because farmers are poor.
[Ch.2] How does Scout take part in clearing up the misunderstanding between Miss Caroline and Walter? What is the result?
Scout attempts to explain that Walter is a Cunningham (and that they do not borrow). Miss Caroline fails to understand and Scout says that Miss Caroline is shaming him. Miss Caroline gets upset and whips Scout by the hand in front of the class. At the end of class, Miss Blount calls out Miss Caroline’s class for being too loud.
