- Divided into 7 traditions on the perspective of comm.
- Semiotic, Phenomenological, cybernetic, sociopsychological, sociocultural, critical, and rhetorical

Semiotic Tradition
A
- The study of how signs make a difference in people’s lives by examining the relationship between those signs
- Divided into 3 parts: semantic( the study of the meaning of s&s), Pragmatics( the implications of sign use), and syntactic( the ways signs are combined into the system of meaning

Phenomenological tradition
A
- Focuses on active interpretation of the world through direct experience.
- What is “reality?”

Cybernetic Tradition
A
- Interconnecting systems in which various elements influence one another
- Together they form something more than the sum of the parts

Sociopsychological Tradition
A
- The individual is a social being
- 3 branches: behavioral( how people behave in comm. situations), Cognitive(how people acquire, store, and process info that leads to certain behavior), Biological(as stated, the biology of people comm.)

Sociocultural Tradition
A
- Focuses on individual identity as part of a larger group.
- Concerned with interaction and interpretation - reality is constructed through language.
- Theorist: Wittgenstein(Language game), J.L Austin(speech acts), Ting-Toomey(Identity negotiation theory)

A
- The study of power from, through, and in communication.
- Marxism, postmodernism
