Chapter 1E & 2E Flashcards
(4 cards)
• Provide specific examples of how information systems support a) written, b) verbal, and c) visual communications. Be sure to explain each and not simply list!
a) written • E-mail • Electronic messaging through the Internet • IM • Instant messaging through mobile devices • Blogs • Electronic logs maintained on the Internet • Wikis • Common knowledge base maintained by users • Store and publish group’s knowledge • Team portals • Web site that publishes information about team’s activity b) verbal • Phone • VOIP • Voice over IP • Telecommunications over the Internet • Digital • Can be saved • Sent as attachments • Turned into podcasts • Podcasts • Digital files Can be downloaded and played • c) visual communications • Conference calls • Several people connected in one phone call • Video conferencing • Conference call with video camera • Net meeting • Proprietary product that produces video conference • WebEx • Moderated conference call • Web cast -Meeting broadcast over the Internet
• Why is configuration management so critical to the success of a project? Be clear what configuration management is. For example, what can happen without configuration management.
Configuration management is management process that controls and tracks changes to shared work product
- When a system needs a hardware or software upgrade, a computer technician can accesses the configuration management program and database to see what is currently installed. The technician can then make a more informed decision about the upgrade needed. Without configuration management, the technician will then have a hard time checking to see what’s installed.
• Name three critical collaboration drivers discussed in class and provide explanations for each.
a. Communication- The ability to give and receive critical feedback is important. The product can improve only when group member can criticize each other’s work without creating rancor and resentment and can improve their contributions based on the criticism received.
- Availability of effective communications systems. If group members are in different areas, email and webcams are crucial
b. Content Management- track and report who and when data was changed. When multiple users are contributing and changing documents, users need to manage content so that such conflict does not occur
c. Workflow Control- a process or procedure by which content is created, edited, used, and disposed. The workflow specifies particular ordering tasks and includes processes for handling rejected changes as well as for dealing with expectations.
• Provide and explain clearly an example of an information system that might be used for knowledge management
Knowledge management gives emphasis on people, their knowledge, and effective means for sharing that knowledge to others. For example, consider that support team for Apple. When a user have a problem with iPhone, he/she might contact Apple support for help. The customer service department has collectively seen just abt any problem that can ever occur. The customer then shares the information he/she knows abt. the problem and how to maybe solve it.
