Chapter 19 - Supplement - Sheet1 Flashcards
Crosstalk
Signal bleed between two adjacent wires carrying a current. Minimized by creating twisted pairs
Near-End Crosstalk
AKA Nearing Crosstalk. Crosstalk originating at the connection from the physical medium to the sender
Attenuation
AKA DB Loss. Degrading signal as it moves through the wire.
Collissions
2 Devices try to communicate on the same physica segment at the same time.
Short
AKA short circuit, shorts. When current flows through a different path within a circuit than it’s supposed ot. In networks, usually cuased by physical fault in a cable.
Open Impedance Mismatch
AKA Echo. Tells you that the cable or wires connect to another cable and there is an impedance mistmach. When this happens, some of hte signal will bounce back in the direction it came from
Split Pairs
Wiring error where two connections that are supposed to be connected using the two wires of a twisted pair are instead connected using two wires from different pairs.
Common Issues with Unbound Media
(Wireless Issues) Interference, Configuration, Distacne/signal strength, Latency, Bounce, Incorrect antenna/switch placement
Common Configuration issues with unbound media
Incorrect encryption, incorrect channel, incorrect frequency, ESSID mismatch, standard mismatch
Bounce
Wireless issue. Could refer to how far a wireless signal is repeated / bounced (up to a mile with the right equipment) or could refer to mutliple paths, where the signal reflets off objects and arrives at the client degraded, out of phase.
7 Troubleshooting Steps for Network+
Identify the problem; establish a theory of probably cause; test the theory to determine cause; establish a plan of action to resolve the problem and identify potential effects; implement the solution or escalate as necessary; verify full system functionality and (if applicable) implement preventative measures; document findings, actions, outcomes
Port Speed: Common Problems.
Speed that a NIC or network hardware port can communicate at. These can be manually configured, and manually configured incorrectly.
Port Duplex Mismatch
One side of a connection attempts to communicate using a different duplex setting than the other side of the connection.
Three Duplex settings for each port of a network switch
Full, Half, Auto
MTU
Maximum transmission unit. Largest size packet that is allowed across a segment. Usually around 1,500 bytes.
