Chapter 19: Plants Flashcards
Anthocerotophyta is a nonvascular plant what is a example and how many species
Hornworts and 100 species.
Marchantiophyta is a nonvascular plant give an example of one and how many species are there?
Liverworts and there is 9000 species.
Bryophyta is a nonvascular plant give a example and how many species?
True mosses and 15000 species
Why are plants autotrophs?
Because they use sunlight as an energy source to assemble CO2 and H2O into sugars.
What is the evidence that plants evolved from algae?
They share a common ancestor charophytes.
What four groups do biologist use to organize land plants?
Bryophytes, seedless vascular plants, gymnosperms, and angiosperms.
What is a cuticle?
A waxy coating that minimizes water loss.
What is a stomata?
Pores that can open and close.
Why do plants close ther stomata in dry environment?
To minimize water loss
What is a vascular tissue?
A collection of tunes that transport sugar, water and minerals throughout the plant.
What does xylem do?
Conducts water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the leaves.
What does phloem do?
Transports sugars produced in photosynthesis to the roots and other no green parts of the plant.
What are the two reproductive adaptations of plants?
Flowers and fruits
What does pollen do?
Delivers sperm to female flower part.
What does the flower produce?
Pollen and egg cells.
