Chapter 19: Organisms and their enviroment Flashcards
What are producers? Give an example
Organisms that produce their own organic nutrients. Usually using energy from sunlight. Plants are producers as they carry out photosynthesis to make glucose.
What is a Herbivore?
An organism that gain its energy from eating plants only
What is a carnivore?
An organism that gains its energy by eating other animlas
What are primary consumers?
Herbivores - they feed on producers (plants)
What are Secondary consumers?
Predators that feed on primary consumers
What are Tertiary consumers?
Predators that feed on secondary consumers
What are decomposers?
Bacteria and fungi that get their energy from feeding on dead and decaying matter and undigested waste (such as feces) by releasing organisms to break them down
What is a food chain?
A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to another, starting with a producer.
What is the source of energy in a food chain?
The source of all energy is in a food chain sunlight.
What do the arrows in a food chain show?
the arrows in a food chain represent the transfer of energy form one trophic level to the next,
How is energy transferred from one organism to another?
By ingestion (eating)
What is a food web?
A food web is a chain of interconnected food chains that give us more information about the transfer of energy in an ecosystem.
What is interdependence?
how the change of population of one can affect others in a food web.
What are trophic levels?
Describe the position of an organism in a food web, chain, or pyramid.
