Chapter 19 Flashcards
Blood
what are the 5 functions of blood
MAIN FUNCTION IS TO BE A TRANSPORTER
- delivers oxygen from lungs to tissues
- transports hormones and nutrients that were absorbed from digestive tract, absorbs waste
- protection and transporting of WBCs and antibodies
- acid-base balance and neutralizes lactic acids
- regulates body temp.
what are the three general characteristics of blood?
- 38 degrees C (100.4 degrees F) is normal temp
- high viscosity
- slightly alkaline PH (7.35-7.45)
what is plasma?
- water
- albumin protein
- nutrients, electrolytes, hormones, gases
buffy coat
WBCs and platelets
hematocrit
volume % of RBCs
albumin is..
a transporter of fatty acids, thyroid hormones, and some steroids
globulin is..
antibodies for defense
transport hormones, metals, steroid, and lipoproteins
fibrinogen is..
clotting agent
conversion to fibrin leaves serum
serum
clear plasm fluid with proteins removed, no clotting agents
how long do erythrocytes live?
120 days
each chains contains…
a single heme which contains one iron.
4 hemes = 4 Fe= 4 o2
blood of oxyhemoglobin
bright red, usually artery has been hurt
blood of deoxyhemoglobin
dark red
rouleaux
when RBCs stack like dinner plates and not stick together, they can bend and flex without injury
erythropoiesis
making of new RBC’s maintained with negative feedback
