Nasogastric (NG) tubes
are plastic or rubber tubes inserted through the nasopharynx into the stomach
What is the primary use of NG tubes?
-used for gastric issues
-Administration of medications
-Decompression of stomach gas (flatus)
-Removal of stomach fluids
-Major trauma
Most common NG tube is?
Levin tube
Levin tube?
-Its a gastroduodenal catheter tube
-May be single or doubled lumen type (should never be clamped off)
Patients with NG tube are…
-experience discomfort
-Care must be taken to prevent accidental withdraw of the tube after it has been inserted
Who is responsible for inserting NG tube?
physician or nurse
Procedure for NG tube insertion
(1 of 2)
-Done by physician or nurse
-Consent signed
-Patient in high flower position
-Measure distance from nose to stomach
Procedure for NG tube insertion
(2 of 2)
-Use lots of lubricant
-Tubes kept cool (easier to inserts)
-Instruct patient to swallow water or air
-DO NOT FORCE
-Tube placement can verified by fluoroscopy or xray
-Auscultation used to verify position
Ways to check the NG tube placement
-Try pulling back syringe of gastric fluid
-Inject air and listen with stethoscope for “whooshing” sound
-Tape in place
-Perform X-ray fluoroscopy
Transporting patient with NG tube
(1 of 2)
-Tube is typically connected to an intermittent gastric suctioning device
-Physician must give confirm order to allow the transfer and interruption of suctioning
Length of time of allowed suction interruption must be…
known and charted
Transporting patient with NG tube
(2 of 2)
-Suction must be re-establish in the radiology department if patient is allowed
-Confirm correct suction pressure
-Be aware of double-lumen NG tube
NG tube Care and removal
-Confirm patient ID
-Obtain informed consent
-Wash hands and turn off suction apparatus if being used
-Gently remove tape from around patient’s nose and make sure its free from skin attachment
