Chapter 18 : The Second World War Flashcards
Blitzkreig
Lightening war
1 September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland. Bombs were dropped on enemy defences. Tanks then came in. Then infantry came in. Poland surrendered after two weeks and there was nothing Britain and France could do to help them.
The phoney war
No fighting had taken place since Poland was invaded.
Britain moved a lot of the British Expenditionary Force to France in case of an invasion.
Children were evacuated from British cities
The war in the west
Hitler used Blitzkreig again on west Europe. They went to Denmark and Norway.
Chamberlain resigned as a result of preventing an invasion on the west. Windston Churchill took his place.
The fall of France
10 May 1940
Hitler bypassed the Maginot line (defensive forces along the French border) and attacked France through Ardennes in Belgium.
The BEF were forced back to the English Channel and became trapped.
