sexual disorders
problems with sexual response that cause a person mental illness
lifelong sexual disorder
a sexual disorder that has been with the person since they began sexual functioning
acquired sexual disorder
a sexual disorder which develops after a period of normal functioning
situational sexual disorder
a sexual disorder a person has in some situations
hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD)
lack of interest in sexual activity (also called termed inhibited sexual desire or low sexual desire)

inability to have or maintain an erection
premature ejaculation
when the man ejaculates too soon and feels as if he cannot control it

when the woman is unable to have an orgasm

any 1 out of 4 symptoms that occur together related to genital pain during intercourse
dyspareunia

vaginismus
reflexive spasm of the muscles surrounding the entrance of the vagina, can make intercourse impossible
biopsychosocial model
a model that argues that physical, psychological, and social factors all contribute to sexual disorders
organic factors
physical factors, such as a disease or injury, that cause sexual disease
predisposing factors
experiences people have had in the past which affect their sexual response
maintaining factors
various ongoing life circumstances, personal characteristics, and lovemaking patterns that inhibit sexual response
cognitive interference
negative thoughts that distract a person from focusing on the sexual experience
Spectatoring
Master’s and Johnson’s term for acting as an observer of one’s own sexual performance
cognitive-behavioral therapy
therapy that combines behavior therapy and restructuring of negative thought patterns
sensate focus exercises
a part of sex therapy developed by Master’s and Johnson in which one partner caresses the other, and the other communicates what is pleasurable
mindfulness
focusing one’s attention on experiences in the present moment in a calm, nonjudgmental way
mindfulness therapy
a system of training people in mindfulness practices; help people regulate their emotions

a part of sex therapy for women with orgasmic disorder, where the woman exercises the muscles around the vagina

the use of a self-help book to treat a disorder

a drug used in the treatment of erectile disorder; sildenafil

a surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction; inflatable tubes inserted into the penis
