what were black codes?
black codes were laws designed to help control former slaves that had been freed
what did the civil rights act of 1866 do?
this law gave the government the right to get involved in state affairs to protect african american rights. it also granted citizenship to african americans
what were two main goals of the radical republicans in their approach to reconstruction?
the radical republicans wanted rights for freedmen and punishment for confederates
what did the 14th amendment do?
it meant that if you were born in the u.s. then you were a u.s. citizen and that all citizens are equally protected under laws of the u.s.
describe the radical republicans’ reconstruction act of 1867
the ten states that had not ratified the fourteenth amendment were required to form new governments

what did the 15th amendment do?
the fifteenth amendment made sure that the state could not deny the right to vote to any male regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude
