what was reconstruction?
reconstruction was the task of rebuilding the former confederate states and readmitting them to the union
define amnesty
amnesty is forgiveness for any crimes committed
describe abraham lincoln’s ten percent plan
lincoln’s ten percent plan required voters in southern states to take and oath of loyalty to the union. when ten percent of voters in a state had taken the oath, a new state government was allowed to be formed
why were the radical republicans considered radical?
they were thought to be extreme in their reconstruction plan. they wanted rights for freedmen and punishment for confederates
define freedmen
freedmen are former or freed slaves
what did the freedmen’s bureau do?
- the freedmen’s bureau provided food, clothing, and medical care to poor southerners, mainly focused on those freed from slavery
- it provided schools and education, sometimes teachers from the north
- it helped people find their own land to farm for work
who was john wilkes booth?
john wilkes booth was an actor, a confederate sympathizer, and lincoln’s assassin.
who was andrew johnson?
andrew johnson was lincoln’s vice president
describe johnson’s reconstruction plan
johnson’s reconstruction plan required southern states to outlaw slavery before they could rejoin the union. (ratify the 13th amendment)
