Chapter 18 Flashcards
What is a lifespan/longevity
The length of time a person can live under the best circumstances
What is life expectancy
Number of years a person in a given population can expect to live
Chemical changes of aging can lead to vision disorders like
Glaucoma and cataracts
What are programmed theories
they see aging as the result of genetic instructions, they include cellular clock theory, hormone stress theory and immunological theory
What are cellular damage theories
They propose that aging results from damage to cells, they include wear and tear theory, free radical theory and cross linking theory
What is normal aging
Physiological processes decline slowly
with age, enabling the person to enjoy life into late
adulthood
What is pathological aging
Chronic diseases or degenerative
processes, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer,
lead to disability and death
What other diseases are under the umbrella term of Dementia
Alzheimer’s, parkinsons, lewy body, vascular, frontotemporal
What are explicit memories
Specific information, such as things we did or
things that happened to us (episodic or
autobiographical memories) and
general knowledge (semantic memory)
What are implicit memories
More automatic; recall the performance of tasks such as
reciting the alphabet or multiplication tables, riding a bicycle, and using a doorknob
What are retrospective and prospective memories
Memories of the past (“retro”) and memories of the things we plan to do in the future
What is long term memory
People recall events from the second and third decades of life in greatest detail and with the most emotional intensity; this may be due to hormones
What is Eriksons psychosocial development in late adulthood
Conflict: Integrity vs despair
Virtue: Wisdom
Important event: Reflecting back on life
What three developmental tasks did Robert Peck define
Ego differentiation versus work-role preoccupation, Body transcendence versus body preoccupation, Ego transcendence versus ego preoccupation
What is a life review
generally unguided they can be extremely complex and
nuanced; they can be incoherent and
self-contradictory
