Chapter 17 RNA Processing, Transcription, Translation Flashcards
sigma
sigma must bind to the RNA polymerase before transcription can begin, forces the RNA polymerase to bind to the specific promotor sites on DNA by guiding them there, binds to the -35 to -10 box area on DNA strand
holoenzyme
holoenzyme is a molecule made up of sigma bound to RNA polymerase, contains RNA as a core enzyme
core enzyme
the enzyme in a molecule that contain the active sitefor catalysis
elongation
the phase of transcription when RNA polymerase is moving along DNA template strand
DNA coding strand
the sequence of base pair that the mRNA will be copying (by adding complementary bases to the opposite strand)
termination
ends transcription, occurs when the RNA codes for a termination signal that cause the RNA to form a hair pin, which disrupts the interaction between polymerase and transcript
RNA polymerase
3 types, each produces a different type of RNA
