Chapter 17 Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system consist of?
The heart and blood vessels.
How big is the heart?
Approximately the size of a fist
Where is the heart located?
In the mediastinum, between the second rib and fifth intercostal space
What is the heart enclosed in?
A double-walled sac, pericardium
What is the pericardium covered by?
An epithelial membrane called serosa
What are the two layers of the serosa covering the pericardium and what does each layer cover?
Parietal (covers the wall of the cavity)
Visceral (covers the organ inside the cavity)
What is the tough outer layer of the pericardium called?
Superficial fibrous pericardium.
What lines the internal surface of the pericardium?
Parietal pericardium
What covers the external surface of the heart?
Viceral pericardium
What is another name for visceral pericardium?
Epicardium
What is the function and name of the space between the two serous membranes?
The pericardial cavity, it’s filled with a little fluid that acts as a lubricant to reduce friction
What separates the atria?
The interatrial septum
What separates the ventricles?
The interventricular septum
What can be seen on the outside of the heart that separates the atria and ventricles?
The atrioventricular groove
What is another name for the atrioventricular groove?
The coronary sulcus
