Health Maintenance Organization
Contraacted by individuals or insurance campanies to provide healthcare for a yearly fee. Such network health plans limit the choice of doctors and treatments. More than half of Americans are enrolled in health maintenance organizations or similar programs
Uninsured Americans
nealy 16% of the public without healthcare coverageand pay their health care expenses out of pocket. More likely to be hospitalized for conditions that could have been prevented
Medicare
Program addeed to the social security system by 1965 that provides hospitalization insurance for the elderly and permits older americans to purchase inexpensive coverage for doctor fees and other medical expenses
Medicaid
public assistance program designed to provide health care for poor americans and funded by both the state & natioinal govt
National Health Insurance
compulsory insurance program for all americans that would have the govt finance citizens’ medical care- proposed by Truman
Children’s Health Insurance Program
provides matching funds to states for health insurance to families with children.
Health Security Act (failed clinton plan)
faced problems of cost & access. Benefitting those without health care and extending coverage for millions. Plan would have necessitated either broad-based taxes , or require employers provide health insurance for their employees or pay premium into a public fund. President proposed raising taxes on cigarettes. Most found the plan threatening, dying in congress
Patient Protection and Affordable care act
Proposed By Obama- like clinton focused on increasing access to healthcare and containing its costs. Passed and is enacted
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
largest fed. indep. regulatory agency. Created in 1970 to administer much of U.S. environmental protection policy
National Environmental Policy Act
passed in 1969- centerpiece of federal environmental policy, which requires agencies to file environmental impact statements
Environmental impact statements
detailing of a proposed policy’s environmental effects, which agencies are required to file with the EPA everytime they propose to undertake a policy that might be disruptive to the environment
Clean Air Act of 1970
aimed at combating air pollution, by charging the EPA with protecting and improving the quality of the nation’s air
Water Pollution Control Act of 1972
law intended to clean up the nation’s rivers and lakes by enabling regulation of point sources of pollution
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
EPA has authority to control hazardous waste from the “cradle-to-grave.” This includes the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. RCRA also set forth a framework for the management of non-hazardous solid wastes.
Superfund
fund created by congress in 1980 to clean up hazardous waste sites. Money for the fund comes from taxing chemical products
