chapter 17 Flashcards
protection from infection using sterile technique, before, during, after surgery
surgical asepsis (sterile technique)
reduction of infectious agents, decreases probablility of infection, but not necessarily to zero
medical asepsis (clean technique)
how do you determine if a sterile package is OK to use
check expiration date
check if it is clean and dry
which way do you place the sterile package on the surface?
top flap opens away from you
can you reach over the sterile package to open flaps?
no, reach around the sterile field
even if you slightly touch the inner surface of a package with your regular shirt sleeve-is it unsterile?
Yes
if resting the sterile package on your hand then which direction does the first flap go?
away from you
how do you drop the contents on the field?
about 6 inches and at an angle
are only sterile items used in sterile fields?
yes
can sterile items be added to a sterile tray after it has been opened?
yes
sterile solutions are only considered sterile where?
inside the bottle
once a sterile solution bottle is set down is the solution considered sterile anymore?
no
what do you check on the bottles? how many times?
name, concentration and expiration. 3 times
some other important steps regarding sterile solutions
hold it for the doctor
once they are open, use them immediately
show name to the dr.
how do you pour a sterile solution?
remove cap and place it topside down
do not pour over label
hold about 6 inches over bowl
no splashing
why is it important to follow the rules for pouring a sterile solution?
allows microorganisms to move from unsterile table top through the drape if not followed
can you re-drape the area if needed?
yes
procedures requiring sterile technique
angiography (stints in vessles) arthrography (contrast into joints) hysterosalpingography ( image of fallopian tubes) operating room myelography biopsies
steps for a surgical scrub
use scrub brush, antiseptic soap, and nail cleaners
remove all jewelry
wash hands and arms first
clean under nails with brush
scrub fingers and hands for 2 minutes
scrub arm to 3 inches above elbow
the hands remain above elbows at all times
dry hands by blotting/rotating around careful not to revisit sight
the purpose of a surgical scrub
1) to remove debris and transient microorganisms from the hands, nails, and forearms
2) reduce the resident microbial count to a minimum
3) to inhibit the rapid rebound growth of microorganisms
procedure for sterile gowning
be a foot away from sterile area when picking up the sterile gown grasp the gown on the folded edges make sure no objects are near the gown gently shake it out raise arms up and put them in sleeves (someone else will tie the ties for you)
procedure for self gloving(open technique)
- pick up the glove by its inside cuff with one hand.do not touch the glove wrapper with the bare hand
- slide the glove onto the opposite hand.leave the cuff down.
- using the partially gloved hand slide the fingers into the outer side of the opposite glove cuff
- slide the hand into the glove and unroll the cuff
- with the gloved hand, slide the fingers under the outer edge of the opposite cuff and unroll it gently, using the same technique
procedure for self gloving (closed tech)
- fingers covered by gown, pick up glove
- dominant hand picks up opposite glove
- place glove on hand with fingers pointing towards you
- assistant hand pulls glove over hand to be gloved
providing care for a tracheostomy ( done for upper airway obstructions)
sterile technique used to create the opening
communicate with yes or no questions or hand signals
treat according to their needs( maslow)
do not touch unless under sterile technique
