Chapter 16 wind and ocean currents Flashcards
What is the moving air in the atmosphere called
Air
What does wind do when moving around the place
Transfer heat
How is wind formed
When air is heated, it expands and becomes lighter. It rises and creates an area of low atmospheric pressure(LP)
When air is cooled, it becomes heavier and descends. It presses down on earths surface and creates an area of high atmospgeric pressure (HP)
Air moves from high pressure areas to low pressure areas. This is wind
What is the coriolis effect
Winds are deflected to their right in the northern hemisphere and to their left n the southern hemisphere by the coriolos effect
what is prevailing wind
The wind that is most common in an area
What causes ocean currents
Unequal heating of the oceans: solar heating
The prevailing wind
The rotation of earth
What is the current that comes from mexico and flows in a north easterly direction towards the north atlantic ocean
North atlantic drift
How does the north atlantic drift influence our climate
Raises the temperature by 8 degrees keeping the water ice free
Makes the air warmer, making the air to be able to hold more moisture bringing us more rainfall
