What are the indicators of inhalation injury?
History of exposure to smoke in a confined space
Deposits around the mouth and nose
Carbonaceous sputum
How long does it take for hypovolaemia for burns to develop?
A few hours.
Hypovolaemia in the acute phase should prompt you to look for a source of bleeding
When providing IV fluids for burns care (e.g parklands formula) is this in top of or including their maintenance fluid?
On top of maintenance
What is the modified parklands formula?
% burn x weight (kg) x 3 = total fluid over 24 hour period
Administer half in first 8 hours
Though after 8 hours use urine output to guide 1-2ml/kg/hr
At what % of carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) should you conisider hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment?
20%
5-20% can be treated with supplemental O2
What is a clue to cyanide poisoning?
Coma
Severe metabolic acidosis without clear cause
What infection are children susceptible to developing post even small burns?
Toxic shock syndrome
(fever, rash, vomiting, diarrhoea, a few days post burn)
