Chapter 16: Spinal Cord and Spinal Nerves Flashcards
arachnoid mater
middle, spider-web like layer
subarachnoid space - bridges the gap between the arachnoid epithelium and the innermost meningeal layer
CSF - acts as a shock absorber as well as a diffusion medium for dissolved gases, nutrients, chemical messengers, and waste products
dura mater
outer covering
epidural space - fat tissue, where epideral anestheia is placed
subdural space
tough, fibrous
layer of dense irregular CT whose inner/outer surface is covered by simple squamous
Pia mater
innermost layer denticulate ligaments - trying to hold cord in place blood vessels glistening layer hard to pin on cadavers
ascending tracts of spinal cord
carry sensory information toward the brain
descending tracts of the spinal cord
convey motor commands into the spinal cord
ascending
sensory
first order neurons
the sensory neuron that delivers the sensations to the CNS
it’s cell body is in a dorsal ganglion or cranial nerve ganglion
second order neurons
an interneuron upon which the axon of the 1st order neuron synapses
the 2nd order neurons cell body may be located in either the spinal cord or brain stem
3rd order neurons
carries the sensory information from the thalamus to the appropriate sensory area of the cerebral cortex
