What are sexual dysfunctions?
Group of disorders that are characterized by clinically significant disturbance in a person’s ability to respond sexually or experience sexual pleasure.
List 4 main categories sexual problems fall into.
- Intrapsychic + psychological
- Interpersonal + relational
- Cultural + psychosocial
- Organic
What are Intrapsychic factors? (3 points)
- Related to how we feel about ourselves (anxiety + depression + self-esteem)
- Importance of early childhood observation based on early family interactions (how sexuality + affection is communicated)
- Trust + Shame + Performance anxiety
What are Interpersonal + Relational factors? (4 points)
- Conflict resolution is essential for communicating
- If anger cannot be expressed safely + effectively –> it will suppress passion + contribute to sexual problems
- Feelings of jealousy + distrust
- Fear of being disappointed + hurt again after a betrayal
What are Cultural + Psychosocial factors? (4 points)
Society’s sexual values taught through:
- Religious teachings (homosexuality + arranged marriage)
- Family teachings (sex is dirty + forbidden/ taboo subject)
- School based education (sex education conveys reproductive biology + how to avoid STD’s –> no discussion of sexual feelings + desire + pleasure)
- Media images (myths)
What are Organic factors? (3 points)
- Cardiovascular disease + its treatments can affect sexual arousal/response (blood flow to genitals)
- Damage to CNS can affect sexual functioning + response (spinal cord injuries)
- Hormones can influence levels of desire

What is the difference between a situation and a generalizable sexual problem?
- Situational –> occurs only during certain sexual activities/partners
- Generalizable –> occurs in every sexual situation (activity + partner)

- Intrapsychic (fear, attitude, expectations)
- Interpersonal/relationship (communication)
- Organic factors (feeling aroused but not lubricated)
